Kiawah Island is about 25 miles southwest of Charleston, South Carolina. It is nestled between Folly Beach and James Island to the northeast, and Seabrook Island, Wadmalaw Island, and Rockville to the southwest.

Kiawah Island is a remarkable place where native landscapes, wildlife, and people coexist for the benefit of all. Many people know Kiawah Island for its private beach, golf resort, and views of the Atlantic Ocean. Whether you are a golf or wildlife enthusiast or both, memories are built on the natural wonders here.

This tour route extends from Straw Market to Haulover Creek, following Kiawah Island Parkway and Kiawah Beach Drive. Along the way, you will encounter points of interest that include information on the island's natural and cultural history. You will also learn more about recreational opportunities that exist throughout the western part of the island.

On this route, you will take in contemporary views of the Kiawah River from the Marsh View tower, learn about the island's earliest families at Mingo Point, and hear stories of the Civil War at Haulover Creek.

Depending on the time of year of your visit, you may spot alligators sunning on the muddy banks of the Kiawah River and a variety of herons and egrets perched in the surrounding trees.

If you see a shadow pass overhead – look up! You may spot one of the local raptors such as osprey, bald eagles, and red-tailed hawks soaring above.
