Let the Kiawah Conservancy be your guide on this audio walking tour through the
Kiawah Island Preserve.

Kiawah Island is about 25 miles southwest of Charleston, South Carolina. It is nestled between Folly Beach and James Island to the northeast, and Seabrook Island, Wadmalaw Island, and Rockville to the southwest.

Kiawah Island is a remarkable place where native landscapes, wildlife, and people coexist for the benefit of all – a place where beautiful memories are made. Many people know Kiawah Island for its private beach, golf resort, and views of the Atlantic Ocean. But, whether you are a golf or wildlife enthusiast or both, memories are built on the natural wonders here.

The Kiawah Island Preserve is on the eastern end of Kiawah Island. This tour will lead you along an enchanting network of nature trails and observation points as you wind through the maritime forest, salt marsh, and lagoon environments.

This audio tour is optimized for walking, but if you would like to bike, we suggest stopping at each site to experience the stories fully. Whether walking or cycling, keep your eyes out for birds, crabs, turtles, and fish, as the Preserve is home to many wildlife species.

As you follow the boardwalk paths, you will learn how the Pleistocene geologic epoch shaped the salt marshes you see today. You will hear how the Preserve changes with the tides and know the locations to best spot marsh birds, herons, and fish.

Depending on the time of year of your visit, you may spot alligators sunning on the muddy banks and a variety of herons and egrets feeding along the lagoon edges or perched in the surrounding trees and ducks floating in the calm waters.

If you see a shadow pass overhead – look up! You may spot soaring raptors throughout this tour, such as osprey, bald eagles, and red-tailed hawks. Also, take time to look down on the paths to see animal's tracks and evidence of the wildlife that may be waiting just around the corner.
