Let the Kiawah Conservancy and Kiawah Photo Club be your guide on this photography tour of Kiawah Island. Learn our favorite photo spots and hear tips for capturing the beauty of Kiawah with your camera.

Kiawah Island is about 25 miles southwest of Charleston, South Carolina. It is nestled between Folly Beach and James Island to the northeast, and Seabrook Island, Wadmalaw Island, and Rockville to the southwest.

Kiawah Island is a remarkable place where native landscapes, wildlife, and people coexist for the benefit of all – a place where beautiful memories are made. Many people know Kiawah Island for its private beach, golf resort, and views of the Atlantic Ocean. But, whether you are a golf or wildlife enthusiast or both, memories are built on the natural wonders here.

The purpose of this audio tour is to provide you with a variety of picturesque spots around the Island where you can photograph Kiawah’s abundant wildlife and diverse natural habitats.

This tour is designed for both beginning photographers using cell-phone cameras and more skilled photographers using more advanced equipment. The tour suggests places to go, unique things to look for at each point of interest, and photo tips to help you capture breathtaking images.

For the best chance of capturing wildlife, try to blend in with nature by wearing muted colors, avoiding the use of fragrances, and respectfully approaching each area in a quiet manner.

This tour will take you to The Kiawah Island Preserve near Cinder Creek on the eastern end of the Island. There, photographers will discover serene marsh landscapes as well as opportunities to find a variety of birds and native wildlife such as deer, crabs, and alligators.

As you quietly walk along the flat dirt hiking trails, which can become “muddy hiking trails” after rain, you will see an expansive well-preserved natural habitat, which gives the illusion that you have stepped back in time prior to development on the Island.

This tour will take you to Turtle Beach Pond, Bass Pond—one of the best places on the Island for sunsets—Marsh Island Park Tower, Willet Pond and Ibis Pond Overlooks, and two locations for vistas of the Kiawah River—Causeway Bridge and Mingo Point.

At each stop, the tour offers photography tips on how best to capture the natural wonders of Kiawah Island.
