Discover the joys of Nyack, the Gov. Mario Cuomo Bridge terminus community on the west side of the Hudson River. Known as the "Art and Soul of the Hudson," Nyack has earned a reputation as a center for the arts and a popular residential area for performers and celebrities. This tour will guide you on a walk or a bike ride through Nyack's history and vibrant cultural scene.
As you follow the route, you'll learn about the Native American tribes who used to hunt fish and oysters from these shores. You'll hear about early Dutch settlers, the role the Nyacks played in both the Revolutionary War and Civil War, and the influence the town and region have had on American artists, writers, and musicians.
There are also stories of critically important industries — sandstone quarrying, shipbuilding, and shoe manufacturing. As you hear the town's stories, be sure to look out for references to these critical influences on the town's development.
Nyack experienced a considerable boost in population and commerce after the Tappan Zee Bridge was completed in 1955. The bridge connected the town to the east side of the Hudson and allowed people and goods to flow to and from New York City more quickly.
We hope you enjoy this tour of Nyack. As you are walking or cycling around, travel at your own pace and feel free to take time to explore the shops and restaurants. Find out for yourself why Nyack is called the "Art and Soul of the Hudson"!
