This building that now houses Java Moon is a favorite local coffee shop. But don't be fooled by its friendly baristas. This location holds a murderous history.
In the 1920s, instead of a coffee shop, this location housed a dress shop called the Toggery Shop. On November 1, 1926 Mattie Tidwell was shopping, perhaps for bridal wear. She was soon to be married to a young man named Robert Collett. Unfortunately for Mattie, Robert's family had less than desirable traits and temperaments. His sister, Madame Pearl, was recognized in the Red Light District as one of Sheridan's most infamous "Soiled Doves."
On that day in November, as Mattie Tidwell shopped, Robert's other sister Miss Geneva Collett, entered into The Toggery Shop and shot and killed her brother's fiancé.
Whether motivated by jealousy or family feud, we'll never know. But we do know Geneva became the first woman in Wyoming to be sentenced to life in prison. She lived out her remaining years behind bars, dying of a heart attack years later.
