About This TourSpring of 1778: The Revolutionary War is raging in southern New Jersey. The British have occupied nearby Philadelphia since the previous September — and George Washington and his troops have spent a devastating winter at
Valley Forge, in Pennsylvania. Both armies are running low on food. The starving American and British forces race to gather food from the region — and keep it from each other — in what is known as the Grand Forage of the American Revolution.
This mobile audio tour takes you back to this critical period during America’s fight for freedom. As you travel through Camden County, New Jersey, from Haddonfield to Camden (previously known as Cooper’s Ferry), you’ll meet some of the Revolution’s greatest leaders — as well as some lesser-known but equally brave heroes — and join them in battle as they face the British in key moments of the war. You’ll also hear about local Quakers’ struggle to reconcile their pacifist faith with the necessity of battle. And you’ll discover the pivotal role the Delaware River played as the events of war unfolded.
Some of the most significant events and places portrayed in this tour include:
· The clash between British and American forces at Kay’s Mill
· The plunder of Haddonfield
· The skirmish at Cooper’s Ferry
· Newton Union Burial Ground, resting site of Quakers, war veterans, and more
· Haddonfield Friends Meeting House
· The Indian King Tavern, where the British jailed curfew-breakers
Throughout the tour, you’ll be introduced to some of the significant players in the war and in this region, including:
· Colonel “Mad Anthony” Wayne
· Elizabeth Haddon and other early local Quakers
· General Casimir Pulaski
· Dolley Payne, future wife of James Madison, and fourth U.S. first lady
