About This Tour

Grace's Gap

Bathhouse

Explore Red Mountain Park’s 1,500-plus acres of dense urban green space, and learn how Birmingham got its start on the land’s rich deposits of hematite iron ore.

Walk on the converted trails of old railroad beds, and discover mining structures that were once the height of technology in the iron and steel industry. Hear the voices of the men who once worked the dangerous mines, and women who once made homes with them in the tight-knit company towns of Red Mountain.

Red Mountain Park follows the “Rails to Trails” model, as evidenced by the long, flat path leading from the main information kiosk at the trailhead. This path is what remains of the once booming Birmingham Mineral Railroad, or BMRR – the trail’s namesake.

This audio walking tour features eleven sites in Red Mountain Park with stories about the city’s history. Red Mountain Park is easily accessible from Downtown Birmingham and neighborhoods throughout the city such as Vestavia Hills, Bessemer, Powderly, Hoover, and Fairfield.
