About this Tour

The Revolutionary War raged for nearly eight years around the fertile farms and small villages north of New York City — situated between the critically important Hudson River and the Long Island Sound. Generals and privates fought battles here, while civilians — some committed to the Patriot cause and some steadfastly loyal to the British King — suffered through plunder and devastation. Towns and farms were burned down, and crops destroyed leaving women, children, those enslaved and free alike, destitute, or worse.

As you visit the sites where the famous, the infamous and many lesser-known individuals struggled during the years of the American Revolution years — 1776 to 1783 — you will have a new-found appreciation for the monumental task they faced to gain freedom from colonialism and form a new nation, the United States of America.

You will learn about:

· The militiamen who captured the British spy, Major Andrè, who was colluding with Benedict Arnold.

· The fierce attacks on Washington’s army by the British and their Hessian allies at the Battle of White Plains.

· The quick-thinking Patriot, Col. John Glover, who helped save Washington’s main Army at the Battle of Pell’s Point.

· The burning of a whole Village by a revengeful British general.

· The wealthy Lord of the Manor whose loyalty to the King led to the confiscation of his vast estate.

· Thomas Paine, George Washington, and Alexander Hamilton.

Tour highlights include:

·  Philipse Manor Hall — a fully renovated State Historic Site; learn the story of the enslaved Africans who served the Lord of the Manor.

· Verplanck Point/King’s Ferry — a tranquil location on a narrow part of the Hudson River where armies — the America, British and French — crossed.

· St. Paul’s Church National Historic Site — a historic church and graveyard where Revolutionary War soldiers died and are buried.

· The Pines Bridge Monument — a recognition of the sacrifices made by the diverse Rhode Island Regiment at the Battle of Pines Bridge.
