The Columbia Land Conservancy (CLC) welcomes you to Overmountain in Columbia County, NY.

Columbia County is nestled between the Catskills and Berkshires along the Hudson River north of New York City (NYC).

The entire Overmountain Conservation Area encompasses 1,700 acres, the largest of the Columbia Land Conservancy sites, and the equivalent of about 2,000 football fields.

The property includes three sections: Kite Hill, Round Ball Mountain, and Fox Hill and includes over 10 miles of trails.

This tour begins just north of Cattalino Road and follows a hiking route parallel to Highway 22. The hike takes through hardwood forests and pastures. It is an audio walking tour designed to be enjoyed at your own pace.

As you hike along the route, you will learn about the nature and history of the forest you are passing through.

CLC acquired the Overmountain Conservation Area in three phases, starting with the bargain sale purchase of Round Ball Mountain from the Kitchen family, followed by the donation of Fox Hill by the Baxt family, and culminating with a gift of 1,300 acres from the Gilmore family.

Since its founding in 1986, the Columbia Land Conservancy has collaborated with partners to preserve the County’s vibrant rural character. It has conserved more than 30,000 acres of farmland, forests, and wildlife habitat to ensure clean air and water, healthy ecosystems, a strong agricultural sector, and a rich variety of outdoor recreational opportunities.

CLC cultivates connection to the land by providing outdoor and education activities at 10 Public Conservation Areas, supporting agriculture by ensuring prime farmland continues to be available to the next generation of farmers, and promoting land protection and smart land use planning.
