About This Tour

A Strange Range

Big Mammals

Welcome to the Flaming Gorge – Uintas National Scenic Byway.   Travel through time with us– over 770 million years of time – from mountain building and fossils to the migrations of current day wildlife; from the “Graveyard of Dinosaurs” to Bighorn Sheep.

Running between Vernal and Manila on US Highway 191 and Utah Highway 44, the Flaming Gorge-Uintas National Scenic Byway climbs foothills and major geological formations, reaching the one billion year old exposed core of the Uinta Mountains near Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. The theme of the byway is “Wildlife Through the Ages” as the route travels through one of the richest areas for wildlife and fossils in the west. During your drive you will not only experience abundant wildlife, but also deep multi-colored canyons, unique geologic features, breathtaking scenic vistas and vast forest landscapes.

For more information about the geology and wildlife of the Flaming Gorge-Uintas National Scenic Byway be sure to stop at The Flaming Gorge Dam Visitor Center; the Red Canyon Visitor Center; or the Field House of Natural History State Park Museum in downtown Vernal, as well as the Chamber of Commerce offices’ in Rock Springs, Green River, Manila and Vernal.  And, if you are truly excited about the geology and wildlife of this beautiful, scenic area,  pick up A Field Guide to the Flaming Gorge-Uintas National Scenic Byway.

This audio tour is brought to you by the Utah State Office of Tourism; The USDA Forest Service; The Bureau of Land Management; Uintah County; The Flaming Gorge Chamber; The State of Utah; Evan’s Family Media; Simplot Phosphates LLC; and the Flaming Gorge-Uintas National Scenic Byway Steering Committee.
