About This Tour

Palatine Church

Welcome to this interactive audio biking tour of the Erie Canal. The tour runs along approximately 35 miles of pathway along the beautiful Canal.

You will pass through many towns, historic sites, and points of interest in Montgomery County, NY.

The tour can be enjoyed in either direction--starting at St. Johnsville or Amsterdam. Stops along the meandering route include Port Jackson, Old Fort Johnson, Fort Plain, Palatine Church, Arkell Museum, and many others.

While cycling the Erie Canalway Trail, this tour brings the little-known stories about the land to life. Hear about historic landmarks regarding slavery and abolitionists along the Underground Railroad. See the taverns and mills that shaped life along the canal. Learn stories about the museums and educational institutions along this route, and go way back in time to learn about the region’s geology, forests, nature, and Native Americans.

This Audio Tour invites visitors to interact with the region in a new and more profound way. Discover all you can do along New York’s legendary canals at The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.
