About This Tour

Big Trout Lake Overlook

Imagine an outdoor experience deeply enhanced with stories, scientific knowledge, fun facts, and natural sounds—with your phone as your tour guide. The Carl A. Preserve audio tour offers all of this.

The Carl A. Gerstacker Preserve, is on the northern shore of Lake Huron in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

This audio walking tour has two walking options each taking about an out-and-back journey that is two miles in total with a few small hills and rises. One route takes you to Little Trout Lake and the other to Big Trout Lake. Both routes are about 1 to 1.5 miles in total, mostly flat with a few small hills and rises, and will end back here in the parking lot.

The Gerstacker Preserve is rich in plant and animal life, including some quite rare species that make their homes here. Protecting the biodiversity of the preserve helps it sustainably support the tourism that’s important to the region’s economy, demonstrating one significant way conservation can strengthen a community.

The Preserve was established in 1993 thanks to the generosity of Marilyn Twining and her family. They sold multiple parcels of land over the years to TNC to form the Little Trout Lake Preserve. The preserve was renamed in 1996 after Carl A. Gerstacker, a founding member of TNC Michigan Board of Trustees.

The Gerstacker Preserve totals over 1600 acres in size, and features several miles of spectacular Lake Huron shoreline. Hear some of the unique history that has shaped this preserve, as well as what The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is doing to protect it and places like it.
