About This Tour

Acme Road

In the early 20th century, more than a half dozen coal mines employed the majority of residents in the greater Sheridan area. This audio driving tour allows you to explore the many coal mines and adjacent communities that were established around the turn of the 19th century. Hear the authentic voices of members of the towns and coal camps as you drive from Ranchester to Sheridan along Interstate-90, US Route 338 and US Route 345 at the base of the Bighorn National Forest.

Located in the Powder River Basin, Sheridan holds the richest deposit of coal seams in the world. Often referred to as Black Diamonds, coal from this region is low in sulphur and rich in energy, making it highly coveted, and highly profitable.

Travel the Black Diamond Byway with Senator Dave Kinksey as your guide. Visit the remnants of coal camps and hear first-hand accounts from those who grew up in the coal towns.

Sites and stories along the route include the Sheridan Museum, the ghost towns of Dietz and Acme, and much more!
