About This TourSet on the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Severn River, the picturesque town of Annapolis features some 17 miles of shoreline. This makes it the perfect home of the United States Naval Academy—and thousands of other boating enthusiasts.
But there’s much more to this place than just sailing. On this tour, we’ll examine the Revolutionary roots of Annapolis and meet some of the founding fathers who lived and visited here. We’ll explore the town’s role in America’s dark history of slavery and the Civil War, while also highlighting the miraculous accomplishments of free Black Marylanders in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
During the tour, you’ll learn about:
● Kunta Kinte, the enslaved African teenager depicted in Alex Haley’s bestselling novel
Roots: The Saga of an American Family. The
Kunta Kinte–Alex Haley Memorial, in downtown Annapolis, is America’s only memorial commemorating the name and arrival place of an enslaved African.
● The
United States Naval Academy’s crisis during the Civil War, when the school was threatened not only by encroaching Confederate forces but also by torn loyalties among its midshipmen and faculty.
● Local protests against the English Parliament in the lead-up to the Revolutionary War.
● George Washington’s decision that stunned the world: to resign from his military post at the end of the Revolutionary War, making way for the young United States’ elected representatives to take over the new federal government.
● The legend of secret underground tunnels throughout Annapolis.
● The story of the last official surrender of the Civil War.
