Imagine an outdoor experience deeply enhanced with stories, historical perspective, fun facts, and natural sounds—with your phone as your tour guide. The Matheson Wetlands Preserve audio tour offers all of this.

The route is a pleasant walk through a lush landscape, which, depending on your pace, might take about an hour.

You'll learn about the plants and animals who live here in the wetlands, as well as some of the threats they face. Wetlands are vital in every landscape, but here in the desert, they are almost magical. The tour talks about how the wetlands, the Colorado River, and groundwater all play a part in the dynamic water flow of this region.

Along the route, you will be given options to explore further. You can see the Colorado River up close and visit an endangered fish nursery. Or, at that point, you can choose a shorter walk that loops back to the parking lot.

The Matheson Wetlands – a refuge for both nature and people -- is the result of a community effort. In 1990, the land was at risk of being developed, but The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources were able to step in. The Preserve's 900 acres makes it the largest wetland complex on the Colorado River in Utah. TNC and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources jointly own and manage it.
