The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center audio tour will accompany you as you explore the Botanic Garden of Texas.
The Wildflower Center is only 10 miles from downtown Austin but it feels worlds away. You can experience a slice of the Hill Country, beautiful native plant gardens, family play gardens, and miles of walking trails just a short drive away.
Mrs. Johnson served as first lady of the United States during the presidency of Lyndon Baines Johnson from 1963 to 1969. During the Johnson Administration, more than 200 laws related to the environment were passed, many of which were influenced by Mrs. Johnson’s work, earning her the nickname “the Environmental First Lady."
In 1982, Lady Bird Johnson founded the Wildflower Center with actress Helen Hayes. The Center opened its gardens and buildings to the public in 1995 and became part of The University of Texas at Austin in 2006. In 2017, it was named the Botanic Garden of Texas.
The Center’s mission to inspire the conservation of native plants is achieved through its gardens and arboretum; its classes, programs and events; its online database, Native Plants of North America; its ecological design and consulting projects; its citizen science programs; its plant conservation efforts; and more.
This tour is designed to be both enjoyable and enlightening. Once you’ve walked the grounds and listened to the Center’s stories about flowers, fire, water and wildlife, consider how you might proliferate Mrs. Johnson’s vision and make native plants part of your world — even in a small way — after you leave.
