Although workers in the commercial mines were unionized, the many small family-owned mines of the region remained independent. You pass two of these north of Dietz. The Shoestring mine and the Custer or Armstrong mine near Highway 339, which operated from about 1931 to 1952. Nearby, on Goose Creek, you pass the still-standing settlement of Kuzaraville. Remembered for its saloon.
