American Kestrel

See a small bird on top of a wire, watching everything in the open field below? It might be a kestrel looking for its next meal. Kestrels are tiny, but they are fierce predators! Though they are only slightly bigger than a robin, they are incredibly fast – flying at speeds of up to 39 miles per hour, and diving at speeds of over 200 miles per hour. Kestrels also have sharp talons, which they use to grab their food – usually insects and small rodents like mice. Their high-pitched cries sound like a hawk’s cry, but they are part of the falcon family.
